Smart Home Lighting

Creating a smart home is a trend that here to stay and the costs have come down as more products have come to market.  Even if you haven’t set out to create a smart home, many products you buy now come with the capabilities to be controlled by an app on your phone.

Thinking of creating a smart home?  The first decision to make is to decide what functions you want to make smart in your home.  Consider items that will offer you the most convenience and that will add functionality to your home. Smart outdoor lighting takes lighting to another level by adding automation, flexibility, and convenience.

Smart lighting is something that can be added to an existing system or part of a brand new install.  Landscape Lighting Guru has installed many different smart lighting systems for customers and there are several different options:

Smart Socket – this is designed specifically for landscape lighting transformers.  It allows you to remotely control your entire lighting system from anywhere in the world with an app

Smart Lamps – Adding a smart outdoor lighting system can be as easy as changing out the bulb in a current fixture.  These lamps allow you to control dimming in a range from 2200K to 5700K color temperature of white and a wide range of reds, greens, and blues from your smart device. These lamps can be controlled individually or can be grouped with others.

Smart Switch – If your outdoor lights have a switch inside the home, then you can swap it out for a smart switch.  Most basic models just offer simple automation and remote on/off functionality or upgrade to models that offer built-in sensors for motion, temperature, and ambient light plus built-in voice controls.

There are a few important points to consider before deciding how best to make your outdoor lighting smart.  All three of these products require that there is Wi-Fi visible at each socket/lamp/switch.  This has led to some people upgrading to a higher quality mesh Wi-Fi system to take advantage of smart capabilities.

Another thing to consider when choosing a smart home product is if the brand allows you to connect to other home devices so that you can add additional items to the system or that they will all work together or within the same app.
