Lighting Trends in the Kitchen
One room in the house that can date your home more than any other is the kitchen. If you have an outdated kitchen but aren’t ready for a major remodel project, consider updating the lighting. A properly lit kitchen with updated fixtures can make the same room feel new and stylish.
The first piece of the puzzle is properly lighting the room. There are four main types of lighting in your kitchen; ambiance, task, decorative and accent and all serve an important purpose. Ambiance lighting should be warm and inviting and is often done with can lights in the ceiling. Task lighting should be directed at where you are working the most in the kitchen and we love under cabinet LED lighting to do this. Accent lighting can highlight key features in your room. Decorative lighting is a reflection of the style and design you want to have in the room. Decorative lighting is usually where the most money is spent when doing a new lighting design.
The second part of the puzzle is updating the decorative lighting fixtures in your kitchen. The recent trends in kitchen lighting is using pendant lighting as a design element that can add interest to the room. You often find pendent lighting used over a kitchen island with 2 or 3 lights. The new fixtures have warm metal finishes like copper, bronze and gold. Many of the new fixtures have a vintage look. We created an ideabook in Houzz with examples of all the decorative features so you can see what we are talking about – click on picture below to see more ideas.
