Hassle Free Lighting Timers

Most outdoor lighting systems are powered by a low voltage transformer. The transformer is then controlled by a timer which will automatically turn the lights on and off at a certain time.  Up till about 10 years ago, the timers that were often installed were manual.  Not all low voltage transformers are created equal.  Our standard is a lifetime warranty stainless steel transformer with an Astronomical Digital Timer.  More on that in a bit.

A manual or mechanical timer requires you to change its settings as the season changes if you want the outdoor lighting to be turn on when it is dark outside.  When daylight savings time starts and ends, you would have need to reset the time as well.  (or for every power outage) To truly enjoy your outdoor lighting when it is dark, a manual timer will need adjusting several times a year.  In this day and age, there is no reason to continue to use a manual timer.  There are so many low-cost options available that making the switch can be quick and painless.

The Astronomic Digital Timer is an improved way to maintain your lighting system and this has always been the standard for Landscape Lighting Guru installations.  There are many companies out there who still use a manual timer unless you “upgrade” to the astronomical one so be sure to check your proposals. What makes an astronomic timer so special?  It automatically determines the exact time for dusk and dawn based on your location. The Astronomic Timer also adjusts for Daylight Savings Time on its own! This timer is adjusting to the ever-changing sunrise/sunset times!!  These timers have long-lasting lithium-ion batteries that hold the time should you have a power outage. These timers are most often located by your transformer but depending on your home’s wiring, we can sometimes install the timer inside at a light switch allowing you to override capabilities from the comfort of your home!

Want to have a more customizable option that is completely hands-off?  There are several different options for smart home timers that allow you to control your lighting system from your smartphone.  They function as both an astronomical timer but you can also override the system or set custom schedules as needed right from your phone.    While these are a great option for many, they do require a good wifi connection at your transformer location which can sometimes require upgrades to your current wifi system.
