Light your Entrance Gate
Your ranch gate is a bit of an oxymoron — it’s an aesthetic “Welcome” as well as a stately “Keep out!” It subtly yet elegantly implies, “This is my property, my friends and family can enter;” yet it confidently states, “All others, stay away!” One could say in this sense that a gate is contradictory when in fact its purpose is intentional. Many ranch owners, make a significant investment in designing stylish gates that represent who they are. These can be statement pieces for your home and property.
After you invest in an entrance gate, it is important that you have lights for it. Lighting is crucial for you and your guest find it and use it safely after the sun goes down. There are several different areas of your gate that are important to light. The keypad is best lit with down lighting from a tree or post so it easy to enter the code. You also want to light the actual gate with spotlights from either side of the gate so you can see when the gate opens and closes. If you have stonework or landscaping around the gate, wall washing the stonework or up lighting on the plants create warm light to the whole entrance area.
We recently completed lighting for a sprawling ranch in the Boerne/Kendalia area backs right up to the Guadalupe River. We were fortunate to work on several different areas of property including their gated entrance. We added warm light to their renovated entrance and gate area to help homeowners and guest alike to easily locate the entrance and utilize the gate safely.
The nearby trees provided the perfect spot to add down lighting onto the keypad. We also added up lighting to the trees to show off these trees and create a warm inviting glow to the area. The stone columns around the gate are wall washed in warm up lighting. They also had some character plants that we were able to put small up lights to show them off. And there are also spotlights in the planting beds that are aimed on the actual gate themselves.
